First experience with Bushnell BackTrack 5 points,
I just received and tested the Bushnell BackTrack 5 points.
Very easy to configure and to use. Really satisfied with it.
Why not 5 stars ?
Just due to the fact that the power turns off automatically after 5 minutes.
So if you’re using your BackTrack and you’re more than 5 minutes away from the destination you would like to go back, you’ve always to press a key within 5 minutes or the BackTrack will turn off.
In my opinion the turn off time should also be part of the basic configuration like time, temperature, distance, etc.

|don’t waste your hard earned money on this item,
I read all the reviews, some bad, some good. I went ahead and bought one anyway. Yeah, it’s the hardhead syndrome. Big mistake. If you have 5 minutes of time to calibrate the device every time you leave your car and have another 5 minutes to stand at the exit of the store to calibrate the unit, then by all means, this item is for you. And don’t forget the stares you will get from other people while flying your “airplane” or walking in a big circle.
However, if you don’t want to look foolish standing next to your car, flying the unit in great looping figure eights (just like a child pretending to fly his toy airplane) and flipping in over and over, then walking in a big circle to calibrate it, then pass on this thing. Oh yeah, and there is no guarantee that your calibration worked. You may have to repeat all the tips again and again (straight from the video from their website).
It takes a long time to find the satelites, then needs calibrated every time you turn it on. And did I mention that it turns itself off after 5 minutes. So guess what? That’s right, another calibration cycle.
I have a Magellan Meridian Color GPS handheld and I have never had to calibrate the compass. It knows what is North and South every time. I also have 2 boat sonars and a Navigation unit for my truck with built in GPS and I have never had to calibrate them.
So, I guess what I’m telling you is: The Bushnell company really fell flat on their face with this one.
Save your money for something worth while. I sent mine back for a refund.
Nuff said.

|Watch the calibration video before use,
The big brown truck brought me a new Bushnell Backtrack Point>5 GPS Friday afternoon. It locks up (finds its location) fast, has a simple interface, and useful data screens. I was horrified with the accuracy of the built in digital compass. After carefully following the calibration instructions several times I pretty much decided the thing was worthless for getting a reasonably accurate vector back to a stored point or a usable bearing on a landmark. Next I went to the web site and looked at the online manual, which was just a copy of minimalist 9 page brochure which came with the unit. I had just about decided to send the thing back when I stumbled onto Bushnell’s “BackTrack Digital Compass Calibration Tips” video. By combining all three techniques demonstrated in the video I was able to get useful accuracy from the compass / trackback arrow. I haven’t sat on or dropped my unit yet so I can’t say how robust this thing is going to turn out to be, but for the time being I plan to leave my older/larger/heavier GPS in the truck and use the BackTrack to find my way around in the field.
