Amazon.com Product Description Golf is a game of precision, so why depend on ballpark guesses when estimating the distance to the green? Enter the Izzo Swami 1500, a fully featured golf GPS unit that offers everything you need to approach the pin with confidence. Powered by the latest SIRFStar III chip and equipped with Insta-Lok technology, the Swami instantly calculates the distance to the front, center, and back of the green on more than 12,000 courses across the U.S., turning your golf game from piffling to precise. The Swami is easier to use and more accurate than a laser rangefinder. That's because the Swami measures distances without requiring a direct line of sight to the target, while a laser rangefinder can only measure to the flagstick or other defined objects within its sight. Plus, a rangefinder's accuracy is highly dependent on how far you are from the target, whereas the Swami's GPS technology is accurate to within a few feet. Most importantly, the Swami simply helps you play better golf. When you know the exact distance to the flag and the borders of the green, you can pick the right club for the distance and do it faster. No more wasting time searching for yardstick markers or sprinkler heads. Just upload the course from the online Swami Map Manager (subscription required) before your round, stand under an open sky, and the Swami's Insta-Lok technology does the rest, locking in the correct yardage to a target with minimal lag time. Even when riding in a cart, the yardage changes instantly. The Swami stores up to 10 courses at a time and automatically recognizes the course you're playing upon powering up. The Swami is also a breeze to use, with intuitive buttons and a large display that allows you to quickly cycle from hole to hole. And even though the Swami is precise and user-friendly, it costs about half as much as most other golf GPS systems. That's because Izzo streamlined the latest technology while maintaining only the most vital features in an effort to make the Swami more affordable. The navigator is built using the same state-of-the-art technology as the highest-end GPS units, but without the costly bells and whistles that most golfers don't really need or use. The Swami is perfectly legal to use in many handicaps and tournaments, as both the USGA and the R&A have allowed the use of distance measuring devices when the local governing committee permits it. Users should always check with the local golf pro if the event is a USGA-sanctioned tournament before using the Swami on the course. Other features include an easy-to-use PC connection for downloads and charging; a rechargeable lithium battery that runs for a minimum of 12 hours per charge; a water-resistant housing; and OS compatibility with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. The Swami 1500, which measures 3.75 by 1 by 2 inches (W x H x D), carries a 90-day warranty. OUCH! How do they map their courses? September 7, 2010 Richard Shannon I purchased my Izzo Swami a couple of months ago. At my home course I can stand right on the newly installed course markers, and it will start with an accurate number, say 100 yards, but then it start to change it's reading. Sometimes I've had it count down from 100 to 90 while I stood in the same place. When I got close to the green it would read, say 25 yards to the front. Then I paced it off, my pace is almost exactly 1 yard, until I was standing on the edge of the green. At this point it will read 10 yards to the front.
I've asked playing partners with expensive units, "What does yours say the yardage is?" Sometime the two different units agree, other times the Izzo is off.
I have reported the problem and am waiting to hear back from Izzo's mapping department. Meanwhile I went to Colorado to play another well marked course. Once again the Izzo is off about 10 yards.
Maybe it's good on the expensive courses that are well known, and well mapped out. I usually play lower end public courses, because I'm still at the point where it makes no sense to pay more than $50 for a round. But a golf GPS would definitely help my game -- but only if it's accurate.
On the plus side, they are rugged. My friend who also has an Izzo dropped his off his bag as we ran to get out of a thunder storm. The unit lay on the wet fairway through a heavy rain, and it was fine when he picked it up from the clubhouse after someone turned it in.
NOT MAC COMPATIBLE August 31, 2010 paul wassermann (Scottsdale, AZ United States) Great device although sometimes quite inaccurate. Best features are large number display easily seen in bright sunlight and simplicity. But you have to have a PC to download and update the ten courses you can have loaded. For us Mac users that means finding someone with a PC to download the drivers and update your Swami. I can't believe Izzo can't make the device Mac compatible, basically thumbing their noses at a significant proportion of the golfing community.
Swami August 25, 2010 Paul After first receiving the Swami in from the mail I had a very easy time setting it up. When I went to my first round of golf with it I was pleasantly surprised. It worked just like it is suppose to. It takes a little while to find the satelite but once it does it works great. I checked it with a laser that one of my fellow golfers had and it was right on with the yardage from the laser. A couple of the pins had been stolen and he had no way of getting the distance so he had to ask me on a couple of occassions how far we were away from the green. It felt good that I was able to tell him. Also when he wasn't in sight of the green he also had to ask me how far away he was. I would prefer this GPS to a more expensive laser due to this. Anyway, I had a good experience with my Swami GPS and would recommend it to anyone. Make sure you don't take a course out to put in another and then go back to the original course and try to use it like I did. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. It took me about 6 holes to realize it wasn't going to work that day and I didn't realize it till I got home and plugged it into my computer and I saw that it wasn't there and what I had done. Idiot as I am. Hope this helps.
Swami swinger August 21, 2010 Renny Severance (Fort Myers, FL) Izzo Swami is a great little GPS range finder. The price is quite reasonable and they offer a wide range of courses to download.
While wading through the setup software can be a slight challenge, the actual humans can be very helpful if you have to call them.
They were helpful and responsive when asked to update a change on course (the club had swapped the front nine with the back nine).
The device is easy to use and reasonably accurate.
Simplest GPS to use! August 16, 2010 KL I searched for a while for a simple Golf GPS unit. I was willing to pay more for ease of use, but I cannot complain about the lower price. I didn't want to have to operate a computer while trying to play golf!
A couple of notes:
There is a fee to access the course downloads.
From my experience the accuracy is usually + or - 2 yards on at least 1 hole.
